Mucch More Than A Game

The much talked/written/blogged/buzzed about superstar collabo of Drake, Kanye West, Lil' Wayne and Eminem: the Boi-1da-produced "Forever", finally has a video. Released to the public not long after 8 o' clock on Tuesday night, it features direction from Hype Williams (of course) and shots from Lebron James' storied career, seeing that this is the lead song from the soundtrack for Lebron James' movie, "More Than A Game". Of course, if it weren't for the frequent clips of him shooting, dunking and blocking shots in between Lil' Wayne and Eminem's verses, nobody would really care.

But, I digress.
Here it is.
Enjoy.

Walkin' On The Moon

Kid Cudi is, to put it bluntly, weird. After releasing his critically acclaimed mixtape EP in 2008, titled: A Kid Named Cudi, that caught the attention of music superstar Kanye West, and a slew of other tracks, he signed to 'Yeezy's G.O.O.D (Getting Out Our Dreams) label and appeared on one of the covers of the Feb. 2009 Freshman 10 issue of XXL Magazine. Not too long after, two hit singles made their way to radio's and music video countdowns: Day 'N' Nite and Make Her Say (w/Kanye West, Common).

Both singles reached in the top 50 of the Billboard charts, with one single (Day 'N' Nite) peaking in the top 5. A country-wide tour alongside fellow XXL freshman Wale made Kid Cudi a star, a title nobody could question after Jay-Z brought him out to perform Already Home (Blueprint 3) at his blockbuster Answer the Call concert. 4 days later, his debut album "Man On The Moon: The End of the Day" was released, a record that will undoubtedly change the game.

If you're looking for punchlines (Ludacris' "Theater of the Mind (2008)); stories of rags to riches (T.I's Paper Trail (2008)); women, cars and money (Drake's So Far Gone (2009)); or bilionaire talk (Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 (2009)), Kid Cudi's debut album is not something you should probably purchase. Rap is a term too loosely thrown around, and I cringe everytime somebody says Kid Cudi's album is a rap album. As a matter of fact, its quite the contrary. Cudi's debut is a well-mixed bowl of rap/r&b/pop/electro/rock/dance all thrown into a blender with sprinkles of marijuana, Patron and naked females. It's an amazing piece of work with unbelievablly stadium-status hooks and infectious melodies, not to mention narration from Chicagoan legend Common. Most people who experiment with all these different variables can only expect to have one or two successes, but not enough juice to push out an entire album, hence extremely lackluster sales. But Cudi keeps the balance between his insanely creative imagination and a hip-hop sound perfectly enough to keep anybody hooked for 15 tracks, spread out through 5 different "acts".

Most people, including the experts at XXL could only give Cudi credit for less tan 60,000 copies, but after hearing the album and a couple of his interviews, I knew that this album was poised to do amazing first week numbers (100k+) and it seems that he may actually reach 120k, which would be record setting. I bet a lot of other "rappers" wish they were as "weird" as Kid Cudi.

Best Beat: Simple As... (prod. by Plain Pat)
Worst Beat: Hyyerr (prod. by Crada) As hard as there is to find a sucky beat, the beat for the first collabo between Kid Cudi and Chip tha Ripper (T.G.I.F -- A Kid Named Cudi) was phenomenal, and I expected more the second time around.
Best Song: Heart Of A Lion: Hard to pick just one, but this was the perfect mix of lyrical content and production I think.
Worst Song: Solo Dolo: It's not a bad song, the hook is phenomenal. However, on an album that has so many near-perfect tracks, this one gets the worst song tag.
Best Guest Appearance: Kanye West (Make Her Say): While there were other star appearances (MGMT, Ratatat, Billy Cravens & Common). On all those other tracks, Cudi still made the song what it was. On Make Her Say, without Kanye, I doubt I'd like it as much.

Best Hook : My World: Kid Cudi reminds me of the pre-2007 50 Cent when it comes to choruses, because he has a special talent for crafting hooks. Remember 50's hook prowess made other artists tracks that much better (On Fire, Hate it or Love it, How We Do), not to mention the hooks on his two great albums (Get Rich Or Die Tryin', The Massacre). Cudi has already assisted the greatest rapper of all time with a hell of a hook (Already Home -- Blueprint 3). That talent makes it difficult to pick the best hook but on My World, Cudi spooks out the listener with some serious singing.

The Day After...

Everybody went crazy over Kanye's interruption of Taylor Swifts first ever Moonman acceptance speech, but I'm sure most people overlooked the fact he was scheduled to be on Jay Leno's debut 2 nighs later.

Once again, 'Yeezy angers, but never disappoints.
First, a sit down with the talk show legend...

Kanye sits down with Jay Leno

...then...a performance of possibly 2009's biggest record...

Jay-Z/Rihanna/Kanye West
Run This Town: Live @ The Jay Leno Show

Notice how 'Ye came out slow, but quickly ramped up.
That was some serious emotion there...

Suav3.

'Ye did that? Yep, Again

It took a long time to come up with a title for this post, probably because I'm still in disbelief at the asshole move 'Ye pulled at Sunday nights VMA's. Don't get me wrong, I'm a serious Yeezy fan, an annoying one to some lol, but talk about bad timing.

The message he had was simple, "You Belong To Me", while it was a huge pop record, didn't deserve to win for some obvious reasons. Beyonce's "Single Ladies" record performed three times as good as Swift's single did on the charts, and furthermore, Bey's video has worldwide critical acclaim, while Taylor's song barely made it on most countdowns.

But ayy, what a difference skin color makes.
Right message 'Ye, aimed at the wrong person.

At a sucky time.
Proceed to be shocked...and maybe even sympathetic.

Mr. Carter leaves London...

Well, not the city.
9 months after they get with the birds and the bees, Lil' Wayne and his "darling baby" Lauren London welcomed their first child together into the world (it's Wayne's third child, Lauren's first). The baby, coincidentally born on September 9th (09/09/09), doesn't just yet have a name, but at least it had a father (Weezy) standing there right by his mother's side when he was born. Umm...Congrats...

9/12: New Musiqq: Lil' Wayne/Drake

On a beat that sounds like it came from the lab of a Mr. Kanye West, Lil' Wayne and Drake trade bars on just what they'd like to do to their sexiest...nastiest...horniest honey dips.

Call: Answered

On this day 8 years ago, people woke up with the horrible and catastrophic memories of the happenings just a day before slowly making their way into reality. The newspapers and news channels were buzzing with news about the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor; the nation was in turmoil.

Well, 8 years later, a good 50,000 people (plus the extra millions who followed along on Fuse) are waking up with unbelievable memories making their way into reality, but its a different kind of unbelievable. Jay-Z, the architect of the 3rd and final installment of his Grammy-award winning Blueprint trilogy, performed at his Answer the Call: 9/11 Benefit concert last night at the world's greatest arena (Madison Square Garden: New York, New York) in front of a sold out crowd (that sold itself out in 4 minutes on September 8th), that was reminiscent of his Fade To Black concert, which celebrated his 2004 "retirement".

It was the most amazing concert SINCE Fade to Black, and it was only fitting that he performed it at Madison Square Garden, and opened the set with his tribute to the city that raised him, "Empire State of MInd". Guest appearances included Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Beyonce, and Swizz Beatz.

It was amazing.

Rap-Sody: Jay-Z Walks Through History

If you haven't seen Rhaposody's new Blueprint III promo commercial, you need to blow the following youtube clip up to full screen and get excited. It's the most genius idea anybody has had for a commercial since HP did a whole series with celebrities hand's and torso. Its a shame some people actually commented asking to explain, but for those extremely casual Jay-Z fans, in exactly 60 seconds, he recreates every album he ever made (not in chronological order).

Amazing.

Looks like Drake's camp took the liberty of releasing the inevitably blogged about track before anyone had a chance to leak it. Thanks to OVO.

Complex Magazines 50 Best Dunks Of All Time .

Screen shot 2009-09-05 at 11.06.30 AM

Fans of N.E.R.D and Hypebeasts (can we call people Hypebeasts before that site started?) creamed their skinny jeans waiting in line for Skateboard P’s dunks. Hype aside, they’re sick, and if you have a pair on ice, you’ll be good even if your401kis lookin’ lean.

And Number 1: Nike Dunk Hi “Wu-Tang Clan” [Released: 1999 ]

nike-dunk-wu-tang

It can be argued that these are simply the original Iowa Goldenrod Dunk colorway with some Wu-Tang embroidery. Actually it doesn’t need to be argued, that’s what these are. But these Dunks take the number one spot for a few reasons. First, they are limited as crap. You can grab them at Flight Club, maybe ($5k+), but not really. At the original drop, releases were rumored at only 36 pairs (plus a few more that Nike dudes made for “sampling”). Second, they’re the Iowa colorway, which is the best of the orignal seven, and the black/yellow has all kind of power undertones behind it. Third, this was the sneaker that started regular Nike’s foray into the world of acknowledging cool. After the Wu-Tang Dunk came Pharrell’s, and then shop Dunks like UNDFTD and Kicks/HI and DQM’s Air Max 90. This was the Dunk that started teh second coming of the sneakerhead, and it’s still the best of the bunch as far as we’re concerned. Wu-Tang forever.
