Muthaf*cka I'm ...

If Red Cafe was signed to Roc Nation, Jay-Z would probably be saying "Cafe could be one hit away his whole career". He may very well be, but this is probably as close as he's gotten. With a helluva Jay-Z sample and Fab's relentless Biggie references, this has New York written all over it.

Drop It On 'Em :: Jim Jones

The resurgence of New York rap post-Blueprint 3 is evident. 50 Cent's numbers, however disappointing, proved the king of beef can still sell records. Fabolous, fresh off of his first ever Billboard 200 #1 debut (Loso's Way), drops a major mixtape alongside DJ Drama tearing up the airwaves as we speak. Lloyd Banks has two singles scorching the internet and radio, one of which was fueled by the assistance of Harlem representative Juelz Santana, who's prepping his first (and most highly anticipated) album in 5 years, not to mention street hits from Maino and Joell Ortiz.

Jim Jones would like to be a part of that. Fresh off a big 2009 which included major hit singles (Pop Champagne, Na Nana Nana Na, Dancin' On Me), his most solid and 2nd most commercially successful album yet (Pray IV Reign) and an enormous co-sign from one of music's biggest record companies (Columbia Records), Jones is ready to hit the music scene again, this time a little earlier than expected (His next studio album isn't expected to hit stores until late summer). The Ghosts Of Rich Porter is his living will and testament, a tribute to not only his success and his future goals, but the life he currently indulges in.

In the past few years, mixtapes have often defined the outcomes of rappers' upcoming endeavors. Examples: Lil' Wayne's The Drought series remain the key component to his selling 1 million first week copies of Tha Carter III, Drake's So Far Gone led to two major label signings (Young Money, Universal Motown), and J. Cole's heart-fueled The Warm Up landed him a meeting and eventual record deal with ... well ... need we say more? Needless to say the mixtape game is not dead, and Jim Jones knows this.

So does Rich Porter.
Enjoy.

El Banks

After "Beamer, Benz or Bentley" proved to be one of the early rap successes of the year, Banks continues his comeback with a solo effort (single #2) titled "Got 'Em Like" produced by Swizz Beatz sound-alike Dready.

Second Go Round?

After his highly-anticipated debut Thank Me Later single "Over" drew more praise for producer Boi-1da's (pronounced: Boy Wonder) talents rather than his, Drake drops his 2nd single from the album, this time featuring R&B super-talent The Dream. Contrary to the debut single, this one (titled 'Shut It Down') features Drake and Dream going back and forth with the R&B vocals, no rapping featured on the track. This was initially going to be Drake's first single, before he reverted to releasing 'Over' first. 'Shut It Down' was produced by 40, who is also responsible for Drake's Successful, The Calm and Houstalantavegas instrumentals.

Enjoy.

Drop It On 'Em :: Banks & Trina

Meanwhile, amid mucho controversy--her phone was stolen and pictures from it are being used in a blackmail scheme--Trina drops the video for her first official single (with some health from Diddy and Keri Hilson) from her upcoming 5th studio album, set to be released May 4th.

World Premiere :: Drop The World

Earlier in the week, I posted the amazing video shoot for Lil' Wayne and Eminem's Rebirth collaboration "Drop The World". Earlier than expected (most likely to precede Lil' Wayne's expected incarceration date of March 8th) the video was released. It's major folks. Enjoy.

On Twitter & Fb I've been getting complaints about the Fabolous mixtape download.

Here's a new link for the There Is No Comopetition 2 Mixtape. Hosted By DJ Drama.

The Wait Is Over

Drake has been building a buzz for almost 3 years now, to the point that he's mentioned in the top 10 rappers alive conversation. No need to go over his resume. Comeback Season, So Far Gone, Best I Ever Had & Successful, 2 Grammy nominations, 100k sales of his mixtape, Young Money signing. It has all been for this moment, this day.

Thank Me Later, Drake's upcoming debut album, set to release late spring/early summer, now has an official first single. It's title Over. You heard it here. First.

Reasonable Doubt

Lackluster album sales -- despite Loso's Way debuting at #1 on Billboard, Fab failed to sell 100k+ copies -- and the absence of a classic project has Fabolous on the outside looking as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Hopefully, his newest installment of the There Is No Competition series with DJ Drama: There Is No Competition 2, leaves a mark. This needs to be big for Fab, especially considering fellow New Yorkers Juelz Santana and Lloyd Banks are preparing huge albums for 2010.

Check back here at 7 for tracklisting & download.

Freshman Showcase :: Big Sean

2 days ago I let loose with XXL Magazine's Freshman class of 2010, and you can expect in the weeks immediately following, all of them will fight to make their buzz the biggest with audio and video releases. Big Sean strikes first.

Big Sean:
-Signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music Label in 2007, and graduated to Island Def Jam with a contract agreement made in 2008.
-Burst on to scene with 2007's "Glenwood" featuring Kanye, his Finally Famous & UKnowBigSean mixtapes, and Hype Williams' directed video for 'Getcha Some'.
-Was recently featured on labelmate Consequence's "Whatever You Want Remix", Wale's "Wonder Why" and Chip The Ripper's "Fat Raps".
-Expected to release debut album, Finally Famous in 2010, which will feature production from No I.D, Kanye West and The Neptunes.
-Claim To Fame: Glenwood, Supa Dupa Lemonade, Getcha Some.

Sean very recently (yesterday) released his latest work, a video featuring labelmate GLC & Chip The Ripper.

Rebirth

Just when you thought Lil' Wayne could 'fuck the world' no more. He escapes prison temporarily for a second time in as many months, and manages to get to Madison Square Garden and perform at Jay-Z's second sold out MSG concert in 6 months. Not only that, he may be able to remain free for the release of his sure-to-be-epic video for his monster Rebirth single with Eminem, "Drop The World", which they debuted at the 2010 Grammy's.

Posse Cut (Again)

DJ Khaled brings out some of his usual suspects (not counting Snoop Dogg) for one of his better singles of late, and the 2nd single off his 3rd album Victory, which dropped today. T-Pain's hook is just about as good as Usher's on 'Fed Up', and Ludacris & Rick match up well with Jeezy and Rick's verses on 'Fed Up', but Drake closed that song out with class. Snoop Dogg closed out 'All I Do Is Win' with, well, less of a bang? Yeah.

Not so fast. Watch again and pause at the 1:13 mark, you'll see none other than Cam'ron making a rare cameo appearance. Sean Garrett and Fat Joe also make appearances in the all-star clip.

The Last Supper

A few days ago I posted the video shoot to this highly anticipated clip from Young Money, and tonight on 106 and Park it was debuted. This was somewhat of a going away party for Lil' Wayne, who will be officially incarcerated on Rikers Island in 48 hours.

No Nicki Folks

XXL Magazine finally released the highly anticipated, controversial, and talked about 2010 Freshman 10 list this morning. With the theme, "A New Breed Of Hustlers", the legendary hip-hop magazine placed prominent up-and-comers such as Jay-Z inaugural Roc Nation signee J. Cole, 2009 Freshman 10 member Curren$y's protege Wiz Khalifa, and the youngest member of Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music clique, Big Sean. What's interesting to me, is the absence of Nicki Minaj, and after much debate, its apparent Drake was also left off this list, even though he was also left off of 2009's cover. Much debate will ensue, but I present the jury with exhibit A.

Since it was just released I had a hard time getting a magnified copy. So I'll do my best labeling them.

From Left To Right: J. Cole, Pill, Nipsey Hussle, Wiz Khalifa (w/the 'P' chain in the back), OJ Da Juiceman (with a gazillion & one chains), Freddie Gibbs, Jay Rock (in the chair), Big Sean (blue hat flipped to the back), Fashawn, and Donnis.

I'll try & provide some deeper insight into these 10 with my next few posts.
